da realsbet: Stoke City midfielder Charlie Adam has told BBC Radio 5 Live that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho should make a swoop for Chelsea legend John Terry at the end of the season.
What’s the word?
da brdice: All eyes will be on the former England captain this summer when he pulls the curtain down on a 22-year association with Chelsea.
Terry has opted to leave the West London club when his contract expires at the end of the season because he recognised that he was not going to get more playing time under manager Antonio Conte.
The 36-year-old has no intention of hanging up his boots, though, and speculation has been rife about where he will move on to.
While speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Adam was asked if he could see Terry reuniting with Mourinho at Old Trafford, and while the Scotsman does not believe it is a realistic possibility, he thinks it would be a good move.
“I couldn’t [see it], but if I was a Mourinho, or somebody like that, I would go and take him. I’d say to him, ’Listen, come and play for a year’. And why not? He’s a leader, a winner.”
Would it work?
Terry won seven major honours during Mourinho’s two spells in charge of Chelsea, but it would be very controversial if he chose to end his career playing for one of the Blues’ biggest rivals.
The defender is seen as a legend among those associated with Chelsea, so it would not be very well received by the fans if he chose to move to Old Trafford.
He does not want to risk tarnishing his reputation among the Chelsea following, and even though Frank Lampard remains an honoured figure despite having a stint at Manchester City, it is difficult to envisage a similar reaction.
From a football point of view, it would be a relatively comfortable transition for Terry as he is very familiar with Mourinho, but he would find himself in the same predicament that he does now.
The defender is down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, and he would likely struggle for regular game time at United too, particularly if the club jump into the transfer market for a new centre-back this summer.
